Origins

Hey friends!
I'm Amy, the owner, maker, and creative mind behind Smells Good Wax Co. Let me tell you a little bit about this dream of mine called Smells Good Wax Co and where it began.

I was roughly five years old when I first learned that people could make candles.  At that age, I thought the grocery store made candles. Haha! Oh to be young.  It just so happened that my family was on a weekend trip to Savannah, GA.  We walked down to River Street to experience the River Street Market. My parents loved to browse local markets, so we would window shop. That's when I saw itthe candle-making booth. I was immediately drawn in by the woman dipping a taper candle into wax. She dipped and dipped, clipped and shaped the wax into  a mushroom—a very psychedelic mushroom. I was in awe! Totally starstruck that a real person, not a machine, made this cool candle.  I watched her dip candles, and even got to dip my hand in the warm wax . I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. From that moment on, I wanted to make candles, and I always thought about this moment as the years passed.

At 18, back in Savannah for my first round of college, I lived in a dormitory and always wanted to make it feel more cozy. Candles weren't allowed, so I bought room sprays, aromatherapy bags, and other items to make my space smell inviting. I thought then and there, "One day I will make my own candles and diffusers." It was a recurrent thought that I let stew in the back of my mind for years.

Time always passes, and life changes. Methods of coziness change too. I discovered wax melts in my 20s and became obsessed. I had five wax melters going, typically at the same time—one in each major area of my apartment. I couldn't get enough. I loved how the scent would change from room to room, sweeping me away into a whole different energy, memory, or daydream. Cleaning days involved citrus and clean laundry scents; Autumn was filled with fruit and cinnamon; Winter smelled like Christmas trees or my Mother's simmer pots; and Spring always smelled like I was frolicking through flower fields. It kept me daydreaming, so I kept the dreams alive by making sure my house smelled amazing. I was spending, what felt like, a fortune on wax melts. That's when I decided to make my own.

It started with melting down an old candle and pouring the wax into skull candy molds. The itch was scratched.  A week later I made my very first candle using that old candle's wick and pouring wax (a small bag of soy wax bought from Michael's art store) into a clear teacup. I steeped a bag of black tea in the melted wax, and dropped in Lemon essential oils for scent.  I placed flowers on top of the candle for decoration.  Everything about this screams "NOT SAFE".  I know. Haha! I never burned it, and I still have that candle sitting on a bookshelf for decoration. From then on, I was hooked.

In my 30s, while putting myself through dental school, I decided to start making wax melts regularly for myself, after doing hefty amounts of candle making research.  As you know, people love wax melts, and friends and family began asking if they could purchase them. Of course, I said "YES!" I wanted to share my little smelly-good creations. I loved hearing how good they smelled and how much people were enjoying the melts.  The rest is history, and Smells Good Wax Co was born.

Smells Good was born out of a need to make spaces cozy, a wish to make life fun and playful, a love of being thrown into good memories, and the desire to help others make their lives more beautiful through scent.

I am a silly, playful, colorful, energetic, affectionate, nature loving, and sarcastic person with a bit of dark humor. I love the duality of dark and light; my home, wardrobe, thought process, and design aesthetic revolve around this.  You will see a lot of my personality across my website and products. This is my brain child. This is where my imagination can play.

I love making custom scents that awaken and promote childhood memories, make your home and workspace comfy, capture the joy of the first rainfall of the season, the playfulness of a day at the beach, help you bring to life the mystery and magic of folklore and the cosmos. I've always loved the quirky things in life, being drawn to acorn hats, nature, and the calls of the moon. I am on a whimsical journey to find what makes our souls sparkle through scent.

I can't wait to take you on a scent journey. Take a look around, find your cozy, allow yourself to dream, and let's get your space smelling good!
